Verb’ing is a design process to create works that attempts to tap beyond the limitation of ones ego and preconception. This process is explored by allowing an inherent dynamics in nature to inform and reveal a new space order through designing systems or rules for the order to grow and surface.
This process begins with close observation of a movement captured through video. The movement is examined by breaking the video into static frames where these frames are ‘geometised’ into a series of constructed drawings. These drawings through further transformation, reconstruct the movement into a new space order.
Verb’ing is a design method to derive works using Verbs in a series of stages to transform and reconstruct natural dynamics of movements into spaces.
Verbs are words that describe movements or actions. By using verbs as starting points, we are attempting to explore the possibilities of creating spaces and structures that are informed by the natural dynamics of movement. To allow an inherent order in a moving object to inform and reveal a new space order through designing systems or rules for this order to grow and surface.
This process attempts to expose to the students a kind of design method that moves them beyond the limitation of their own ego and preconception to allow inherent order in nature to inform design. At the same time, this process aims to bring reconnect them to their hands and bring awareness to details and the craft of making in design by constructing large models on their own.
This method was developed in Nanyang Polytechnic as part of the year 2 studio brief for Diploma in Space & Interior Design.
